The Wine and Viticulture program at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, invites applications for a full-time, three-year intermittent appointment starting January 5, 2009, consisting of two academic quarters per year (six months, January-June) for a three year period (total of six academic quarters). Appointment will be made to the Food Science & Nutrition Department. Responsibilities include teaching introductory and advanced level enology courses, supervision of undergraduate and graduate internships and research projects, and development and supervision of a winemaking/research lab. Ph.D. in Enology, Food Science, or related field, and 3-5 years of wine industry experience required. University or higher-level teaching, expertise in enology and wine analysis, and knowledge of and experience in developing and managing winemaking facilities are also required. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Wine & Viticulture major is the first interdisciplinary program within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences with concentrations in enology, wine business, and viticulture housed respectively in the Food Science and Nutrition Department, the Agribusiness Department, and the Horticulture and Crop Science Department. The major focuses on blending viticulture, enology, and the business aspects of the wine industry in a degree program aimed at producing graduates ready to step into careers in California’s multi-million dollar wine industry. The enology lecturer position will reside in the Food Science and Nutrition Department, which has 12 full-time faculty, numerous part-time faculty, support staff, and approximately 580 majors. Location of this program in the Central Coast premium grape growing region offers tremendous opportunities with the wine industry. The Central Coast of California is home to over 200 wineries and approximately 100,000 acres of premium wine grapes. The area’s diverse climate is suitable for both warm and cool climate growing and fermentation conditions.
Department faculty are active in research and other professional activities and may serve as thesis advisors for students working toward a Master of Science in Agriculture with Specialization in Food Science and Nutrition.
