Appalachian State University (ASU) seeks applications for a full-time, twelve-month, faculty position in Viticulture and Enology (V&E) to begin in July, 2009. The appointment is renewable subject to satisfactory performance evaluations. The successful candidate will interact closely with the new Environmental Science Program, Appalachian’s Research Institute for Energy, Environment, and Economics, and will report directly to the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at ASU.

Appalachian State University is one of the fastest growing schools in the 16-school University of North Carolina system. With an enrollment of more than 16,000 students and located in Boone, North Carolina, the University sits in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina and is an hour away from the Yadkin Valley wineries in North Carolina’s first dedicated viticulture area. With access to local ski resorts and other numerous outdoor activities, Boone is one of the premier tourism and outdoor recreation destinations in the southeastern U.S.

Applicants for the V&E position should have a M.S. or Ph.D. in Enology, Viticulture, or a relevant area of agricultural science with actual winemaking and field research experience preferred. ASU’s academic V&E degree is pending approval and the successful applicant will be expected to contribute strongly to the design and implementation of that curriculum at the University. This position will initially be considered as non-tenure track, although the potential for a tenure-track appointment exists for highly qualified candidates who possess the Ph.D.

The successful applicant should have research interests in the area of “Steep-Slope” Viticulture and will have flexibility in proposing new education and outreach programs to help ASU become a wine-education destination for students and the public interested in the wine industry and mountain viticulture. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in environmental aspects of mountain wine growing, including sustainable production, soil erosion control, and agrochemical mitigation. ASU is also home of the Appalachian Center for Mountain Winegrowing that helps develop and support the growth of high-altitude vineyards and wineries in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Appalachian range. This Center is expected to help develop a new cooperative test winery that will be designed to address sustainable production, research, and education objectives important to the mountain wine community. The successful applicant will also oversee the WISELAB program at ASU. WISELAB, a mobile wine and grape analysis laboratory owned by the University, travels to vineyards and wineries around the state to provide just-in-time service. The College of Arts and Sciences realizes the above position description is extensive and will consider making two complimentary hires pending the availability of funds.

Applications, including a letter of application, C.V., and list of professional references, should be sent to Viticulture and Enology Search Committee, College of Arts & Sciences, ASU Box 32021, Boone, NC 28608. Electronic applications accepted only in pdf format at cassearch@appstate.edu. Applications will be considered until the position is filled; review of complete applications begins 4/30/09. Appalachian State University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.
