DAVIS, CA, July 28, 2009… Dr. Christian Butzke of Purdue University has been confirmed as president of the 2009-2010 American Society of Enology and Viticulture (ASEV). He will lead the 12-member board to build on the success of Opus One’s Michael Silacci, the immediate past president. Patty Saldivar, viticultural consultant, was also confirmed as first vice president and Dr. Sara Spayd of North Carolina State University was elected second vice president.
“It has been an honor and pleasure working with Michael Silacci and to follow in his footsteps as the next ASEV president,” said Butzke. “His leadership fostered sophistication and innovation among the outstanding and dedicated individuals on the board.”
Christian Butzke, a former commercial winemaker, has been the enology professor at Purdue University’s Department of Food Science since 2005. He will lead the ASEV board as it works to enhance relevance and value for its membership through continually evolving programs, publications and special events. Butzke, a member of ASEV since 1993, has served five years on the board of directors and on almost every committee within the Society. He has also organized various successful ASEV and Unified Symposium program events, including the recent Cabernet Symposium in Napa, California.
John Clark of The Wine Group was re-elected as director and Patty Skinkis of Oregon State University is a new director. Thomas Collins of Foster’s Wine Estates Americas vacated his director position as he was appointed secretary/treasurer to complete the term previously held by Sara Spayd. Peter Cousins of U.S. Department of Agriculture/Cornell (New York) and Jim Harbertson of Washington State University will continue as directors. Steve Kupina has resigned as Technical Projects Committee (TPC) Director due to professional redirection outside the industry, and the board will address this vacancy in August as well as the director position.
The American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV) is a non-profit professional society dedicated to the interests of enologists, viticulturists and others in the fields of wine and grape research and production throughout the world. Membership includes professionals from wineries, vineyards, academic institutions and regional organizations. More information on the ASEV, its programs and annual meeting can be found online at www.asev.org.

NAPA VALLEY, CA, July 8, 2009… More than 800 wine industry leaders, researchers and other academic representatives from around the world gathered in Napa in June at the ASEV’s 60th annual meeting, putting research and science center stage among world famous wineries and vineyards.
“To mark our 60th Annual Meeting, we’ve made significant enhancements, not the least of which is hosting it in a world-class wine country where the research the Society fosters is being put into practice everyday,” said ASEV Executive Director Lyndie Boulton.
Despite a challenging economic climate, Boulton says attendance at the week-long conference held strong and was similar to the corresponding registration for the 2008 Annual Meeting held in Portland, Oregon. In addition to an extensive agenda of symposia and presentations by respected speakers from around the globe, the meeting included a salute to international winemaker Zelma Long and a research overview delivered by Honorary Research Lecturer Andy Walker. Recognition of students who will be the torchbearers of the future in wine and grape research included granting best presentation awards in enology and viticulture. Ending the week-long event was the well-received Cabernet Symposium, organized by outgoing ASEV President Michael Silacci and his successor, ASEV President-elect Christian Butzke.
Audio recordings of individual sessions or as an entire conference package are available for purchase at www.asev.org.

The Annual Meeting in Napa was a first in many regards and with positive outcome. We are pleased to have delivered program content for over 800 attendees representing many states and countries, professions and academic institutions.
Our gracious sponsors made it possible to include wine receptions and tastings to highlight our Napa grape and wine community and an extensive slate of invited speakers for our three different symposia. We are greatly indebted to our team of volunteer board and committee members that organized this extensive program with member service as our ultimate measure of success.
We especially commend our students and congratulate the recipients of the ASEV Best Student Presentation Awards and ASEV scholarships with reflection on our future.
Thanks to each of you who contributed to this national event whether you participated as a presenter, invited speaker, conference attendee and/or sponsor. There is no greater assurance of sustaining our industry than gathering as one wine and grape community to exchange vital information whether it occurs in a formal or informal manner.
