The Texas AgriLife Extension Service, an agency of Texas A&M University, is seeking an Extension Associate to serve the west Texas region as a member of the Texas Viticulture Extension Team. The Extension Associate will collaboratively plan, implement, and evaluate educational programs in wine grape production for commercial producers. Responsibilities include serving as the primary point of contact for wine grape producers in west Texas and providing educational support via telephone, email, and on-site visits to vineyards. Other responsibilities include planning, conducting, and interpreting applied research/demonstration projects, and assisting with statewide viticulture educational programs. This is a full-time 12-month position with benefits.

Location: Lubbock is located in northwestern Texas; it is considered the hub city of the South Plains and is the economic, cultural, and social center of the region. The city of 218,000 is home to Texas Tech University and major medical facilities, and is known for its rich musical heritage and unique museums.  Housing costs are considered below those of comparable cities and cost of living is very favorable.

There are more than 180 wineries in Texas and the wine industry has an estimated annual economic impact of $1.35 billion. Many wineries throughout Texas use grapes grown in the deep, red sandy loam soils of west Texas, where the low humidity and elevation over 3,500 ft. is conducive to high quality grape production.

Required Education and Experience: Master’s degree in agricultural science or closely related field or equivalent combination of training and experience (Bachelor’s degree plus 4 years relevant professional experience).

Preferred Education and Experience: Master’s degree in viticulture or horticulture. Experience in outreach education including development and delivery of educational programs using a variety of methods and media. Demonstrated professional competencies in principals and practices of grape production. Excellent communications skills, both oral and written.

Review of applications will begin in December, 2009 and will continue until the position is filled.
