Director
Oregon Wine Research Institute
Oregon State University College of Agricultural Sciences
Oregon State University seeks nominations and applications for a 12-month, full-time (1.00 FTE), fixed-term faculty position. The appointment includes indefinite tenure on a 9-month basis at 1.00 FTE at the rank of associate professor or full professor, with the academic expectations thereof, for individuals who are outstanding leaders in viticulture, enology, or closely allied fields to be director of the Oregon Wine Research Institute. The director will participate in the development of the structure, goals, and objectives of the Institute, allowing the rare opportunity to have an active hand to shape its operation into an internationally recognized grape and wine research organization. The Institute’s unique breadth (addressing viticulture, enology, marketing and business development) as well as Oregon’s multiple grape growing regions and opportunities for regional collaboration allow the director a much larger variety of research and industry topics than is common to other director positions. The Institute is a partnership of Oregon’s world-class grape and wine industry and its leading agricultural and natural resources research institution, Oregon State University. The importance of the Institute to the State of Oregon, the university, and the Oregon wine industry has been demonstrated through their joint funding of this Institute in the face of an extremely difficult financial environment; the Institute is of vital importance to Oregon.
Required qualifications for the director include an earned doctorate or terminal degree in enology, viticulture or a discipline closely allied with the wine and grape industry; a
national/international reputation for professional excellence in the grape/wine field; outstanding communication skills; successful grants and fundraising experience; previous budget management skills; demonstrated ability in collaborative leadership, administrative and personnel management skills; ability to accommodate frequent travel; and experience working with the grape and wine industry. The individual selected for this position will provide administrative and scientific leadership for an eventual 8 to 9 faculty from units within the College of Agricultural Sciences with appointments in the Institute, and as needed will enlist others on and off campus to enhance the efforts of the Institute.
The director will benefit from OSU’s close working relationship with Oregon’s dedicated, innovative, and forward-thinking winegrape industry. The director will articulate an imaginative vision for the Institute and broaden engagement with the grape and wine industry throughout Oregon, and will play a visible leadership, coordination, and communication role in Oregon, the Pacific Northwest, the nation, and internationally. The director must have a demonstrated leadership ability to coalesce university researchers and the wine/grape industry to build effective plans and programs that will advance the state of viticulture and enology knowledge. The existing trans-disciplinary and multi-institutional faculty team working in grape and wine research at Oregon State University and associated institutions (USDA-ARS) is exceptionally collaborative and collegial. The director is expected to seek extramural support in the form of grants and gifts for the Institute’s programs.
The quality of life in Corvallis, a community of 53,000 people situated in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, has been rated exceptionally high in recent published surveys and national rankings. Oregon State University is one of only two American universities to hold the Land Grant, Sea Grant, Sun Grant, and Space Grant designation and is a Carnegie Doctoral/Research-Extensive university. Ocean beaches, lakes, rivers, forests, high desert, the rugged Cascade and Coast Ranges, and the urban amenities of the Portland metropolitan area are all within a 100-mile drive of Corvallis. Approximately 18,000 undergraduate and 3,800 graduate students are enrolled at OSU, including 3,500 U.S. students of color and 1,100 international students.
