Production Assistant Professor – Viticulture and Enology

Position Characteristics: The position emphasizes wine grape production and vineyard management. Candidates with an interest in plant physiology, and cultural practices applicable to vineyard conditions in the San Joaquin Valley are preferred. The successful candidate will be expected to teach (usually 50% teaching dependent upon department needs) in the areas of general viticulture in close cooperation with the campus faculty and industry stakeholders. The successful candidate will be expected to advise students, supervise student research projects, and engage in a rigorous scientific research agenda. Research is to be supported through grants and contracts and involve collaboration with other research scientists to disseminate research results. Close interaction and cooperation with the grape industries is also expected. Initially, the successful candidate will be given a twelve-month assignment. Willingness and ability to work in collaborative multidisciplinary teams and to complete tasks on time are essential characteristics of the person filling this position. Specific assignments will depend on department needs. The successful candidate may be called upon to teach in a distance education mode and will be encouraged to develop web-enhanced and/or web-based instruction. Outcomes assessment and service learning are important components of the university curriculum. The successful candidate will be expected to work cooperatively with faculty and staff in the department, college and university, as well as with grape and wine industry representatives.
Academic Preparation: An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Botany, Plant Science, Plant Physiology, Horticultural Science, Pomology or related discipline is required for appointment to a tenure track position. Postdoctoral experience preferred. Qualifying degrees must be from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.
Teaching Or Other Experience: Candidates with experience in wine grape production and the ability to communicate in Spanish are preferred. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence and scholarly activity at the university level. A record of writing grant proposals and attracting external funding is desirable. All candidates must demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students from a diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
