Assistant/Associate Professor: Viticulture/Plant Genomics

The Wine Research Centre in partnership with the Michael Smith Laboratories invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position to be appointed to a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Viticulture/Plant Genomics. The position will be within the Food, Nutrition and Health Program in the UBC Faculty of Land and Food Systems (Vancouver campus), with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2013.

The successful candidate is expected to be a creative and leading scientist in the field of viticulture/plant genomics and have an outstanding research record. Experience in plant molecular biology, particularly in viticulture, will be a strong recommendation. The successful candidate will be required to establish a vigorous and extensive research program in molecular viticulture, and will have some teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The successful candidate will be provided with a fully equipped molecular biology laboratory and will have access to outstanding faculty and service units in the Wine Research Centre, the Michael Smith Laboratories, and The Centre for High Throughput Biology.  Available facilities include the Nucleic Acids and Protein Synthesis (NAPS) unit, the Protein Production Pilot Plant, the DNA Microarray Facility, the Functional Genomics Core Facility and the Proteomics Core Facility. These facilities provide a strong foundation for cutting edge research in functional genomics.  In addition, the eight hubs of the CFI-funded Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics provide state-of-the-art equipment for characterizing gene products. Close collaboration is envisaged with scientists in the Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre, the only large-scale genome sequencing centre in Canada.

Outstanding opportunities exist to attract substantial research funding from Federal and Provincial funding sources dedicated to genomics research (Genome Canada, Genome British Columbia, National Centres of Excellence Program, Canadian Institute for Health Research, and the MRC and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s Genomics Initiatives).
