The Department of Viticulture and Oenology is a unique university department in South Africa that focuses on using training and innovative research to provide the South African wine and grapevine industries with well-qualified human resources, cutting edge technology and the latest scientific knowledge. The research fields covered in the departement include ecophysiology, physiology, analytical chemistry, molecular biology and bioinformatics and are applied to all areas of the wine sciences.

The following vacancy in viticulture is available for a suitable candidate to become part of a dynamic teaching and research team:

Duties:

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Viticulture;
  • conducting an active and productive research programme in viticulture, preferably in the context of a team, and linking to and expanding the existing research programmes in viticulture, as well as wine sciences in general;
  • securing of funds to support the research programme;
  • academic supervision of postgraduate students;
  • continuously publishing research results by means of articles and conference papers;
  • developing national and international research and industry partnerships;
  • providing service to the Department, the University and the wine/viticulture industries.

Requirements:

  • PhD or PhD (Agric) in Viticulture or a suitable related field;
  • a proven record of teaching; research and publication (commensurate with the level of appointment);
  • experience in managing a research group as well as setting up and management of resources and infrastructure for research.

Professor:

  • A research and teaching profile as befits a leading figure in the chosen field;
  • a proven track record of successful Doctoral and Master’s supervision;
  • a well-established international research profile, including an excellent and sustained record of published research in peer-reviewed journals;
  • demonstrated success in securing funding to support large research programmes;
  • a proven record of team work and leading a team.

Associate Professor:

  • A proven record of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Viticulture;
  • an excellent and sustained record of published research in peer-reviewed journals;
  • the demonstrated ability to obtain research funds;
  • a proven track record of successful Doctoral and Master’s supervision;
  • demonstrated ability to work in a team.

Recommendations:
All post levels:

  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • a keen interest in a research field that is a good fit with the departmental research profile.
