Position Overview:
Winemakers LLC is seeking a viticulture and enology student to
join our team for the 2019 growing season. Our company has
vineyard and winemaking operations in Oregon, Washington, and
Idaho. We Supply fruit to a broad range of customers throughout
the northwest including wineries in the Willamette Valley, the
cities of Seattle and Portland, Walla Walla and Boise. This
internship will be based out of our 1200 acres of vineyards in
Washington located in the Yakima Valley and Horse Heaven Hills
AVA’s. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in a well
known wine producing area close to numerous recreational
activities.
Most our time will be spent at Alder Ridge Vineyard with the
remaining time spent at our other two sites in the Yakima Valley.
Our schedule can be variable but is usually expected to be 5 days
and 40 hours a week. The start date and duration of this position
is flexible but generally runs from May to late August/the
beginning of September with the potential to stay on later into
the fall for harvest.
Your duties will include:
- Crop estimation
- Vineyard scouting (weeds, insects, fungal infections, animal and weather damage, etc.)
- Data Collection
- Learning how to and following Restricted Entry Intervals
- Scouting for other problems (anything else that can go wrong)
- Sampling fruit for maturity during harvest (brix, pH, TA, Phenolics)
- Participating in occasional taco lunches (usually on Fridays)
Requirements:
- Be currently enrolled in or a recent graduate from a viticulture and enology program or a similar area of study
- Be willing to work extended hours outside in all weather conditions (anywhere from freezing rain to 100 degree heat)
- Be able to or learn how to safely operate an ATV on rough terrain for long periods of time
- Possess a knowledge of common vineyard pests and diseases or a willingness to learn
- Be able to lift 40 lbs
- Be able to stand, bend and walk for extended hours
- Have strong communication skills
- Must have a valid driver’s license, good driving record, reliable transportation, and be able to provide your own housing
- Have the ability to work independently with little supervision, a great attitude, and a willingness to learn
