Tom CollinsDr. Tom Collins, assistant professor at the Wine
Science Center at Washington State University (WSU), Tri-Cities,
has been confirmed as 2021-2022 ASEV president as of July 1.
Known for his extensive work in chemical analysis and, more
recently, smoke exposure in wine, Dr. Collins has been an active
ASEV member since 1993. For more information,

The Board also welcomes new incoming directors Hope
Goldie, Director of Winemaking at Darioush Winery in
California and Yun Zhang, Viticulturist at Ste.
Michelle Wine Estates in Washington. We thank outgoing director
Torey Arvik, Chief Science Officer at Sonomaceuticals/WholeVine
Products in California, for his service. Additionally, the board
appointed Jim Harbertson of Washington
State University, Tri-Cities as the Technical Program Director
for a second term.
Anna Katharine MansfieldAnna Katharine Mansfield is an associate professor of
enology at Cornell University, providing leadership in enology
extension and research focused on wine quality and production
efficiency. She is currently serving as a board director for both
the ASEV National and the ASEV-Eastern Section – an ASEV first.
Anna Katharine has been a member of ASEV since 2000 and is
actively involved as an AJEV reviewer, ASEV-ES Oenolympics chair,
and ASEV-ES annual conference speaker and moderator.
Interestingly, her path to wine science was anything but
conventional.

Congratulations to the 30
students from throughout North America who received the ASEV
scholarships! The Society awarded a total of $88,750 in financial
support to students pursuing scientific research and advancement
in enology and viticulture.
Two scholarship recipients,
Amanda Fleming (Enology) from the University of
Arkansas, Fayetteville, and
Adréanne Hérbert-Haché (Viticulture) from Brock
University, Canada, received ASEV’s top scholarship. They each
were awarded $12,500 for exceeding expectations of the
traditional ASEV scholarship program as well as demonstrating
their leadership capacity. Click on their names above or the
