ASEV Presents Full-Day Symposium Focused on Recent Advances in Grapevine Red Blotch Virus (GRBV) Vectors and Management

Symposium Chair Dr. Anita Oberholster of the University of California, Davis, has pulled a line-up of speakers that will have you seeing red…I mean, Red Blotch.

This full-day comprehensive update on GRBV and its impact on the wine industry will be presented by leading researchers in their respective fields. Presentations will include an overview of the virus and progression, how red blotch disease spreads, methods for tracking the disease remotely, how to mitigate the disease in the vineyard and how GRBV impacts wine composition and sensorial attributes.

The symposium will offer practical advice on how to counter GRBV, appropriate controls, and an opportunity to taste wines made from grapes infected with the disease.

Vernon Singleton Disciple and Revered Wine Chemist to Present Honorary Research Lecture

Respected professor emeritus and phenolic wine chemist Dr. Andrew Waterhouse of the University of California, Davis, will present this year’s Honorary Research Lecture, “ Three Ideas,” on June 19 in Portland, Oregon.

ASEV honors a research lecturer who is actively involved in scientific research and has a current national or international reputation in their field of research.

Dr. Waterhouse inherited Vernon Singleton’s (ASEV Honorary Research Lecture recipient in 1986) mission to study phenolic compounds after joining the Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis in 1991. Initially, the French Paradox directed his early collaborations on resveratrol and health-related phenolic adsorption and metabolism studies. His current research focuses on phenolics in vineyard developments as well as winemaking techniques, and wine oxidation studies that look at basic chemical pathways using modern analytical techniques. He headed many projects – some with industry involvement, including a large-scale productive oak barrel study and others that attracted public interest, including studies on chocolate and antioxidants and most recently, red wine headaches.

“I am most grateful to the Society for this honor, but the real honorees are the many students and visitors who had great ideas, and of course, did most of the work. I hope Vern Singleton would be pleased as well,” said Waterhouse.
