Dr. Hildegarde HeymannProfessor, author and leading sensory scientist Dr.
Hildegarde Heymann from the University of California, Davis, will
be presenting the ASEV Merit Award on Wednesday, June 23, at
11:15 a.m. PDT. Her presentation, spanning her 40-year career in
sensory science, will be presented live on the virtual format.
“Broadening the understanding of winemaking from a sensory
perspective is a contribution I am deeply proud of,” said Dr.
Heymann. “It is a privilege to join a prestigious group of men
and women whose work I have revered. With great appreciation, I
am honored to be recognized by the Society and respected peers.”
Dr. Gavin SacksDr. Gavin Sacks, Professor and Associate Chair of Food
Science at Cornell University in New York, will be this year’s
keynote speaker for the 72nd
ASEV National Conference. His address, “Reducible Complexity
– The Knowns and Unknowns of Hydrogen Sulfide and Sulfur Dioxide
in Wine,” will take place on Tuesday, June 22, at 10:30 a.m. PDT.
“I’m very pleased to have this opportunity,” said Dr. Sacks. “I
came from a background outside of wine and grapes, and I was
struck at my first ASEV meeting in 2008 by how welcoming the
community was to new faces.”
Dr. Hans SchultzWe are pleased to present this year’s Honorary Research
Lecturer, Dr. Hans Schultz of
Hochschule Geisenheim University in Germany. Dr. Schultz will be
presenting the 2021 Honorary Research Lecture, “From Canopy
Systems to Water Relations to Climate Change – An Unsteady Path
in an Ever Changing Environment,” at the 72nd ASEV National
Conference on Thursday, June 24, at 11:15 a.m. PDT.
Dr. Schultz’s presentation will draw from his over 245 published
papers and current work on climate change adaptation in grapes.
Dr. Anita OberholsterDr. Anita Oberholster, Associate Specialist in Cooperative
Extension in Enology for Agricultural Natural Resources (ANR),
based at University of California, Davis, will present “The
Challenges of Modern Extension Programs” on Tuesday, June 22, at
11:15 am PDT. She is the recipient of the 2021 Extension Distinction
Award.
“I love science, agriculture and wine. My job is the perfect
blend,” says Oberholster. “Working with the grape and wine
industry has been extremely rewarding and I am especially
grateful to the ASEV for this high honor and recognition.”
